PRGS WEEK LONG ENCOUNTER

In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we are offering a week-long Encounter with Glass for artists and glass artisans of all experience levels. The students who attend will encounter a variety of materials and techniques in glass, while receiving hands on attention and instruction from Pearl River Glass Studio artists. The week will be a collaborative educational experience where we share our knowledge and passion for glass art. Along with instruction, each visiting artist can tailor their week’s activities to suit their own interests and style of self-expression. The facilitators for the week will be Andrew Young with advanced design rendering techniques, Joy Abedikichi with creating kiln-formed glass imagery, Rob Cooper with glass painting techniques, and Jonathan Simms with multimedia experimental etching on glass.

MEET THE ARTISTS
Joy Abedikichi

KILN FORMED GLASS ENCOUNTER

The goal of this studio time is to create an image in glass using kiln-forming techniques, explore the spontaneous nature of this type of work, and create in glass a reflection of the artist’s individual sensibility and style. The student will leave with what they create; it may be a finished piece, a study, or as part of a larger artwork the student can continue after the encounter. Students are welcome to choose a design to recreate in glass. Options include reproducing in glass a painting, your original design or a photograph. This will be a time to immerse yourself in the creative possibilities of glass in any subject matter, portraiture, landscape or abstraction. Joy will help each artist to use kiln-formed glass expressively and proficiently. The options are limitless for the kind of work that can be created. Please feel free to inquire specifically about this workshop by emailing Joy at:

Andy Young

CREATIVE DESIGN RENDERING

Andrew Cary Young has spent 40 years preparing design renderings for his stained glass, architectural and residential art glass commissions. We have a saying in the studio “the window looks just like the rendering” and this is what PRGS strives to achieve. Andrew will share his discoveries and processes in this class. The discipline of the Russian style of icon writing in egg tempera, which he has studied for years, contributed to the evolution of his process. The student is asked to bring their own set of watercolors and their favorite brushes.

Rob Cooper

GLASS PAINTING ENCOUNTER

In this workshop, we will cover the fundamentals of trace line painting, highlighting with multiple matte layers, and possibly finish with silver stain. We will have the opportunity to explore further techniques based on interest and time. Students are encouraged to bring drawings they would like to interpret into glass paint. This class is open to all levels and should offer something for the seasoned glass painter as well as beginners. Robert Cooper has been working in the field of glass painting for 20 years and will be able to answer many questions and work closely with each student. Please bring any glass tools you have, as well as a dust mask and/or respirator. Email Rob with any questions at:

LAYERED IMAGERY : PRINTMAKING AND PAINTING ON KILN FORMED GLASS

This workshop will be an exploratory study of multi-layered image making with kiln-formed glass. A variety of painting and printmaking techniques will be utilized to achieve unique multi-layered images. Both traditional and unconventional techniques, tools, and materials will be offered. The goal of this session is to encourage discovery and enhance your willingness to explore new expressive possibilities in your own personal journey of creative endeavors. Discussion will include a brief overview of lines, shading, and shape-making methods, using both traditional and contemporary means.
