The Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson, Mississippi, is home to over 70 leaded stained-glass windows, each a masterpiece of craftsmanship and history. These windows, dating back to the building’s construction, tell the story of Mississippi’s heritage through intricate designs and symbolic imagery. Over time, exposure to the elements and structural aging took their toll, necessitating a multi-phase restoration effort led by Pearl River Glass Studio.

A Monumental Restoration Effort

Pearl River Glass Studio has been instrumental in restoring the Capitol’s stained glass, undertaking two major projects:

• All Exterior Stained Glass Windows (2013-2015) – This extensive project included the restoration of the three monumental figurative windows located on the grand staircase between the second and third floors:

  • Mother Mississippi – A symbolic representation of the state’s deep connection to its rivers and natural landscapes.

  • Native American – Honoring the indigenous people who first inhabited the region.

  • Pioneer Settler – Depicting the resilience and determination of those who built Mississippi’s early communities.

• House of Representatives Chamber Skylight (2022-Present) – A massive, ongoing effort to restore and reinforce the stained-glass skylight, ensuring its longevity while maintaining its historic integrity.

Blending Tradition with Innovation

The restoration process required careful disassembly, cleaning, and re-leading to preserve the original craftsmanship while reinforcing structural integrity. Advanced techniques, such as brass reinforcement bars and a steel cable suspension system, were incorporated into the House Chamber skylight to provide long-term stability without disrupting the historic aesthetic.
