Herlihy Residence Stained Glass Windscreen
Ridgeland, MS
Blending Function and Artistry in Outdoor Design
Nestled along the Barnett Reservoir in Ridgeland, Mississippi, the Herlihy Residence windscreen is a stunning fusion of stained glass and custom steelwork, designed to provide both beauty and practicality. Installed in 2019, this three-panel glass installation was created to block and redirect harsh winter winds from an outdoor in-ground hot tub, enhancing the space’s comfort while maintaining an unobstructed view of the landscape.
A Custom Design for Function and Elegance
Designed by Andrew Young of Pearl River Glass Studio, the windscreen features custom steel framing set into a reinforced concrete base. While the metalwork was fabricated off-site, final installation and glass placement were carefully completed by PRGS craftsmen, ensuring precision and artistry at every stage.
A Tapestry of Textures and Light
The stained glass selection was curated to complement the natural surroundings, incorporating a blend of clear textures, beveled glass, and opal water glass. A highlight of the design is the use of Reamy Glass, a rare mouth-blown glass from Germany’s Glashütte Lamberts Glass, known for its windy texture and dynamic movement. The combination of these materials creates a mesmerizing play of light and reflection, offering both privacy and an artistic focal point.
Art in Harmony with Nature
More than just a functional windbreak, the Herlihy Residence stained glass installation stands as a testament to how architectural glass can elevate outdoor living spaces. By merging craftsmanship, design, and natural light, this project transforms an everyday structure into a breathtaking piece of functional art.
