True Light Missionary Baptist Church, Jackson, MS

Reverend Marcus Cheeks contacted Pearl River Glass Studio about a special project for True Light Missionary Baptist Church. A few years ago, we prepared stained glass windows using kiln formed fused glass for all the windows in the sanctuary and education rooms. Reverend Cheek had the idea of adding a lighted cross to the baptistery area. We met at the church to discuss the idea of what to do. The existing plywood planter box with plastic fern greenery had to go. I designed a traditional
Romanesque arch with columns more in keeping with traditional Baptist church design. The focal point is the new cross. I prepared a design made in plywood by Wayne Young that is mounted on the rear wall. The glass we used reproduced the style and color of stained glass we made a few years ago. LED lights were added to the cross to provide dramatic lighting. Glass artist Adrienne Domnick prepared the special glass pieces. Reverend cheek had a special reveal in mind too. All the work on the baptistery remodel and installation of the cross was done in one week. The surprise of the new look for the church was very well received by the congregation.
